The Under 9's Program
What is it?
The Mentone Mustangs under 9 training program was initiated in 2018 by Samantha Groves and is currently run by our club coaching coordinator Chris Mwaba. The program was created to teach and develop the fundamental skills of our youngest age group, so as they grow up, they carry on the basic skills and knowledge of the game (dribbling, passing, catching and shooting). This program also allows us the opportunity to develop and mentor our Youth Coaches. Chris has introduced the Youth Coaching Program to help build on their capabilities and knowledge of the game to enhance their effectiveness as a basketball coach and a mentor to junior athletes.
By running this program, we aim to create a standard within our club of the fundamental skills taught and acquired by players in our youngest age group, whilst also improving the standard of our coaches. The skills taught in this program can be viewed here:
When and Where is it?
Under 8's and 9's train on a Monday at Parkdale Secondary College. Training sessions start at 4:30pm. Basketballs are provided for all Mustang players at this training venue because bringing your own basketball is prohibited (THIS IS ONLY THE CASE AT PARKDALE SECONDARY).
Under 8's and 9's games are currently played at Cheltenham Secondary, Mentone Girls Secondary and Southern Basketball Stadium. Location and directions can be found below.
